How to play Xain'd Sleena (World)

The arcade game Xain'd Sleena came out in 1986 and is a side-scrolling adventure. Xain is the main character. He is a kind of galactic bounty hunter or freedom fighter who has to defeat evil forces that control five planets, each with its own weather and geology, such as forests, deserts, volcanoes, and a metallic world.

After the last boss, the player jumps to a spacecraft and plays an intermediate stage where the ship has to devastatedenemy ships that are on their way to the next planet. Each planet is played with a horizontal scroll. There is a fight against a huge spaceship after three planets.

There is no "official" order of play because the player can choose the order in which they want to play the different worlds. But playing them broadly from left to right works about half the time.

The spheres:

  • Cleemalt Soa: An asteroid that doesn't seem to have an atmosphere; the part where the player has to jump properly to cross a gap is a clear danger. Should you fall, you will lose a life, and you only get three of those. The last boss is a swordsman who will exterminate you with one hit if he hits you. Stay away from him. Just launch him and run away again.
  • Lagto Soa: A world in the jungle with huge bugs, plants that eat meat, and something that looks like a monster in the middle of a swamp. This might be easier for some people than the other one. For the last boss, you have to first devastated some kind of robot unit and then launch him. When his robot is gone, he tends to launch more, which makes him more dangerous.
  • Cleedos Soa: A place in the desert. Think of Dune, with sandworms. Another type of alien that looks like green-hooded Javas and their "master" that looks like a big metal head watch over a temple in the middle. Needs a lot of hits, but don't touch it! The last boss is pretty shooty and has a flying suit. Make sure you exterminate more enemies before you go up against him.
  • The world under the sea is full of fish, crabs, and aliens that look like lobsters. The level itself is pretty easy, but the boss at the end is much harder. He shoots missiles at a high rate of speed and in volleys. He is also very quick and can jump. An opponent that is very tough.
  • Guwld Soa: The volcanic world, which I think is the hardest level to get around in. Both fires and falling into lava will exterminate you, and there are lots of chances to do both. The last boss in this area wears a big power armor and fires heavy laser blasts at close range or volleys of missiles at long range. He doesn't seem to be able to jump, though, which you should use to your benefit.

As a hint, there is a small species of alien that looks like it doesn't have any weapons and will try to run away as soon as you see it. If you launch it, a P-labeled Pod will fall off and give your weapon a chance boost, which is very helpful when fighting the final boss. You lose the boost again if you lose a life. One of the first games that let you crouch, ease up, and perform a double jump was this one.

The planets might get their ideas from their counterparts beyond the belt of asteroids. It goes from Jupiter to Guild Soa to Kworal Soa to Saturn to Cleedos Soa to Uranus to Lagto Soa to Pluto to Cleemalt Soa.
