Another KOF, another year. This year, there are some small improvements to the graphics and sounds, as well as new moves and a new game style. The story is much more important in this game because the middle bosses can be different based on which team you choose. There are also some special ends that can only be seen when certain "Edit Team" combinations are chosen.

You can play The King of Fighters '97 in either the Extra or Advanced mode. Extra Mode works like most AOF/KOF games; your power gauge fills up as you protect yourself or charge up. In the new Advanced Mode, on the other hand, you can only charge your gauge while you fight and do special moves, like in the Street Fighter series. Advanced lets the character roll past attacks and sidestep them, and Extra lets them do the same. Advanced also lets the character do a powerful "Super Desperation Move" (SDM) whenever they have at least two full bars of charged energy saved. In Extra, on the other hand, an SDM can only be done when a character has less than a quarter of their life left.

Some new characters are Kyo's student Shingo Yabuki, the "Blue" Mary Ryan and Ryuji Yamazaki from the Fatal Fury Outlaw Team, and "Blue" Mary Ryan and Ryuji Yamazaki from the New Face Team. As of this writing, The King of Fighters '97 has 29 different characters, not counting the six boss characters that are linked to Orochi and can only be reached by entering a secret code.
