Acclaim launched the action video game Iron Man/X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal for the Game Gear in 1996.
The player chooses whether to play as Iron Man or X-O Manowar at the beginning of the game. Jumping, punching, shooting an endless supply of energy beams (that may be enhanced by icons) and using a constrained but replenishable source of energy to fly are all abilities shared by Iron Man and X-O Manowar. While X-O Manowar can use his shield to deflect hostile attacks, Iron Man can only duck. A computer screen displays the player's objectives at the beginning of each mission.
Players can gather health icons throughout the game to restore their health, as well as fuel, stronger laser blasts, and a unique icon that enables one mega-blast from a character's armor chest plate. In order to find new icons, deactivate specific weaponry, or proceed throughout the game, the player characters can also destroy various gas canisters, metal wiring, and control panels in the game.
