Backrooms were initially discussed on the 4chan forum, when a member submitted a picture of a vacant room with faded walls, flickering LED lights, and numerous entrances and exits at random.

Someone explained the true meaning of these rooms as a maze that you wanted to escape from as quickly as possible. Although the backrooms may look like wet, uninviting spaces, they provide the possibility of becoming lost in a maze of rooms without knowing how to exit them or coming face to face with a terrifying monster in a hallway.
